There are 3 major telecommunications providers in Singapore, namely Singtel, StarHub and M1. SingTel is the most famous provider, the best cell phone operator in Singapore and the price is almost the same as the other providers. For this reason we always buy a Singtel brand SIM card.
Although we have narrowed down the choice of a SIM card with a recommended provider in Singapore, there are many choices of SIM card types so that sometimes it’s quite confusing which one to choose. To simplify this guide, we divided the discussion into 2 parts, namely: Tourist SIM card and ordinary SIM card.
Tourist SIM Card in Singapore
SingTel Tourist SIM card is actually almost the same as other SIM cards, the difference is that the package offered has been adjusted to the needs of short-term visitors to Singapore. The package choices are as follows:
$ 15 – 4GB of data, 500min of local calls, 100 local SMS, 30min international calls – valid for 5 days
$ 30 – 10GB of data, free use of social media data, unlimited local calls and SMS, 90min international calls – valid for 10 days
$ 50 – it’s basically a $ 30 card, but you can get 2 SIM cards and 20GB of data that can be used together by both cards – valid for 10 days.
If you are in Singapore for only 5 days or even less, a $ 15 Tourist Tourist card package is the right choice. Highly recommended!
Local SIM Card in Singapore
If you are going to be in Singapore for longer than 10 days, you can buy a Tourist SIM card and extend the data every day for $ 3 or buy an ordinary SIM card and activate a normal data package with a validity period of 30 days. SIM cards usually vary in price depending on the contents. And not all stores sell all options in full. The usual SIM card prices are as follows:
$ 8, 15, 20, 28, 38 & 50. To be honest the value included in these cards is usually not very good, especially the internet package part which is only valid for 7 days. So we recommend buying the cheapest SIM card, which is the one that costs $ 8. After buying this SIM card, we will just top up with a data plan that fits your needs:
$ 10 – 1GB and expire in 30 days
$ 20 – 2GB and expire in 30 days
$ 30 – 5GB and expire in 30 days
There are other data plan options available but for a shorter period of time. But it’s far better to buy a Tourist SIM card if you only need data for 10 days or less.
In conclusion, there are 2 choices to buy a SIM card in Singapore using the SingTel provider:
Buy a Tourist SIM card if you live in Singapore 5-10 days.
Buy an ordinary SIM card and top up with a data plan if you live more than 10 days.
Where to buy a SIM card in Singapore
The easiest place to buy a SIM card is at Changi Airport in any terminal. There are counters that sell SIM cards after you exit the custom and see the money changer. Just look in the area around there and you will find a counter that sells Tourist SIM cards.
But Changi Airport does not sell ordinary SIM cards that cost $ 8. The easiest place to find this type of SIM card is in the Little India area, there are many mobile shops that sell SIM cards and can also help with settings.
Indeed, when visiting new countries, it is always a bit difficult to buy a SIM card. Hopefully with this information you can decide whether to buy a Tourist SIM card or an ordinary SIM card and you can also find where to buy the SIM card.
